Who we are
Liffey Metals is run by Andrew Liffey, its founder. That is him at the bench in the photograph, in the Dublin workshop where parcels are opened, weighed and tested. His is the name on the email address (andrew@liffeymetals.com), on the YouTube channel where the openings are filmed and on every payment, so there is one named person behind every offer the business makes.

What we do
We buy gold, silver and platinum from private sellers: jewellery, coins, cutlery, scrap and dental gold, hallmarked or not. From anywhere in the Republic of Ireland that means the free insured postal pack; from Northern Ireland and from any other EU country, a WhatsApp quote and then the seller's own insured post to Dublin; and in Dublin, lots worth more than 1,000 euro are seen in person, by appointment. Every item is weighed and tested by XRF before an offer is made, the net price per gram for each grade is published before you send anything, and payment is by bank transfer.
Buying is most of what we do, not all of it. We refine gold and silver for private and business clients, returning it as 999 grain, a bar or cash, and some of the refined silver goes on to become silver nitrate and other laboratory salts sold through our sister business, Liffey Chemicals. We also run free XRF testing sessions for jewellers, write probate and insurance valuations, and sell casting grain, coins and bars through the shop.
Why we publish our prices
Most gold buyers in Ireland quote only after they have your items in hand, and the figure is hard to compare with anyone else's. We think the honest way is the other way round: a live, net price per gram for every grade, published on the prices page and refreshed through the day, so the offer you get is the figure you already saw multiplied by the weight. If a buyer will not put a per-gram price in writing before seeing your gold, you cannot check their offer; with ours, you can.
The published price is the price paid. There are no testing fees and no handling charges, and every rate is rounded down to the cent so rounding never goes in our favour.
How we test
Every item is weighed on a calibrated scale and tested by XRF, X-ray fluorescence, which reads the composition of the metal without scratching or damaging it. Hallmarks are read but never relied on: a stamp is a claim, the test is the fact. With postal sales, the parcel is opened, sorted and tested on camera, and your itemised offer lists each piece with its grade, weight and price.
Independent
We are not part of a chain and we do not answer to a refinery, which is why we can price at the live market and publish the rate we pay for every grade. Our valuation service is kept separate from buying: we do not make offers on items we value.
