Selling gold in Ireland

How to sell gold in Ireland

The best way to sell gold in Ireland is to compare buyers on one number: the net price per gram, in euro, after all deductions, for your carat. Most buyers will not put that number in writing before they see your gold. We publish it: today we pay 34.90 euro per gram for 9ct and 75.10 euro per gram for 18ct, live as of 01 Oct, 00:12 Dublin time, and you can sell by insured post from any county in Ireland.

Where you can sell gold in Ireland

There are four kinds of buyer. They all pay for the same thing, the fine gold in your items, and they all start from the same live London price. The difference is what share of that value reaches you, and how easy it is to find out before you commit.

BuyerHow the price is usually givenWorth knowing
Cash for gold shopsA total for the lot, in the shop, after weighingQuick and walk-in. Per-gram rates are rarely published, so compare against a published rate before you accept. Ask about testing fees.
JewellersCash offer or part-exchange creditPart-exchange can be worth more than cash. A good jeweller tells you when a piece is worth more than its metal. Scrap rates vary widely.
Bullion dealersBuy-back prices for coins and bars, often publishedStrong for sovereigns, Krugerrands and bars. Scrap jewellery rates are not always published and may be lower than for bullion.
Postal buyersOffer after the parcel is opened and testedWorks from any county. Check three things: are prices published per gram, is the parcel insured at the buyer's risk, and are declined items returned free.

Liffey Metals is a postal buyer based in Dublin that publishes its net prices per gram for every grade, tests every item by XRF on camera, insures parcels up to 2,000 euro at our risk, and returns declined items free. In-person appointments in Dublin open spring 2027; postal requests are open now.

The one question to ask any gold buyer

“What is your net price per gram for 9ct (or 18ct, or 22ct) after all deductions?” That single figure lets you compare a shop in Cork, a jeweller in Galway and a website in Dublin on equal terms. Watch for the ways it gets obscured:

  • A price per pennyweight or per ounce instead of per gram. A pennyweight is 1.555 grams; a troy ounce is 31.103 grams.
  • A headline rate followed by a testing fee, handling charge or “refining deduction”.
  • A total for the lot with no weight or carat breakdown, which hides the rate entirely.
  • Weights rounded down, or stones and clasps counted as gold in one lot and deducted in another.

A fair offer lists each item, its carat, its weight in grams and the rate applied, and the rate matches what the buyer published that day.

What we pay today, per gram

These are net figures: the price per gram of the item as it sits on the scale, after every deduction. There are no testing or handling fees. The only deduction we ever make is 12 euro return postage at cost on postal sales that complete, shown as its own line and waived when the parcel's melt value is over 500 euro.

Every figure is live London spot, times the fineness of the carat, less our margin, rounded down to the cent. The full table with silver, coins and a calculator is on the prices page, and the reasoning behind each number is on gold price per gram in Ireland.

How selling to us works

  1. Check the rate for your carat above and, if you like, weigh the items on a kitchen scale for a rough figure using the calculator.
  2. Request a free postal pack or prepaid label. Post it from any post office; it travels insured at our risk.
  3. We weigh and XRF test every piece on camera and send an itemised offer at the published rate.
  4. Accept and you are paid by bank transfer. Decline and everything is returned free.

When your gold is worth more than its melt value

Scrap pricing is right for broken chains, single earrings, worn rings and unfashionable pieces. It is wrong for a small number of things: signed pieces from named houses, good antique jewellery, diamonds and coloured stones of any real size, and coins with collector value. We flag those before you decide rather than melting them. Read melt value versus resale value if you are unsure which pile your pieces belong in.

A note on 22ct: Indian and Middle Eastern jewellery is often 22ct, hallmarked 916, and pays 91.72 euro per gram with us today, well above the 9ct rate most Irish jewellery earns. Do not let a buyer price 22ct as “yellow gold” at a 9ct rate.

Questions people ask

What is the best way to sell gold in Ireland?

Get the net price per gram for your carat from more than one buyer before you go anywhere, then sell to the one that publishes it, tests the metal properly and pays by bank transfer. For most people outside Dublin, an insured postal service with published prices and free returns is the best combination of price and convenience.

How much is scrap gold worth in Ireland today?

It depends on the carat and the live gold price. 9ct is 37.5 percent gold, 18ct is 75 percent, 22ct is 91.6 percent. Our current net price per gram for each is on this page and on the prices page, refreshed through the day.

Do cash for gold shops pay a fair price?

Some do, many do not, and you cannot tell from the window. Ask for the net price per gram for your carat before handing anything over. If the answer is a total for the lot, or per pennyweight, or comes after a deduction for testing, work it back to euro per gram and compare it with a published rate.

Is it better to sell gold to a jeweller or a gold buyer?

A jeweller may offer more as part exchange against a new piece than in cash, and a good one will tell you if a piece is worth more than its metal. For a straight cash sale of scrap, a specialist buyer with published per-gram prices usually pays more than a retail counter.

Can I sell gold without ID in Ireland?

No reputable buyer will pay without recording one valid photo ID. It protects sellers as much as buyers. We check ID before any payment and do not buy from anyone under 18.

Do I pay tax when I sell gold in Ireland?

Usually not on a few pieces of old jewellery, but a gain can be liable to Capital Gains Tax at 33 percent above the 1,270 euro annual exemption, and disposals of personal belongings for 2,540 euro or less are exempt. See our page on whether selling gold is taxable, and Revenue for the rules.
