Priced on the fine gold, per coin
Sell gold sovereigns in Ireland
A full sovereign contains 7.32 grams of fine gold and a half sovereign 3.66 grams, and that is what we pay on. Today that is 717.58 euro for a full sovereign and 358.79 euro for a half, live as of 26 Oct, 12:03 Dublin time, at our published bullion rate of 98.03 euro per gram of fine gold. Scarce dates and mint marks can be worth more to a collector, and we say so before anything is melted.

Both figures are the fine gold content times today's bullion rate, rounded down to the cent, updated 26 Oct, 12:03, Dublin time. Sovereigns are 22ct (916.7 fine), so a full sovereign weighed as jewellery at the 22ct rate comes to almost the same number; the table below shows both rates. The price per gram shown is our published price for that grade, guaranteed. The grade, and so the final price, is confirmed after XRF testing.

Are my sovereigns worth more than their gold?
Most are not. Sovereigns were struck in the hundreds of millions from 1817 on, and a worn common-date coin trades on its metal with a small dealer premium. A few things change that: a branch mint letter above the date on the reverse (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Ottawa, Bombay and Pretoria all struck sovereigns), the shield reverse on early Victorian coins, proofs in their original cases, and low-mintage years in exceptional condition.
We look at the date and the mint mark on every coin before pricing it. Where a coin has a collector market above its gold we tell you, and suggest a coin dealer or auction house, because paying melt for it would be the wrong price. A sovereign with a worn date, a rubbed rim or a solder mark from a mount is gold, and is priced as gold.
What about a sovereign mounted in a ring or pendant?
Mounted sovereigns are common in Ireland: a full sovereign in a 9ct ring, a half sovereign on a chain. The coin is paid on its fine gold content and the mount on its own weight and carat. If the coin and mount cannot be separated without damage we weigh the piece whole and XRF test each part, and the offer lists the two lines separately so you can see what each is worth.
A coin that has been in a mount is nearly always a common date, and soldering removes any collector interest in any case, so the metal value is the value. There is no deduction for the solder or for wear.
How many sovereigns can I post?
The free insured pack covers 2,000 euro per parcel, so at today's figure that is 2 full sovereigns. Larger holdings are handled in person in Dublin by appointment, from 1,000 euro: you watch the coins weighed and tested and are paid by bank transfer the same day. Either way, the first step is a WhatsApp message with the count and a photo, so we can confirm the figure per coin and the route before anything travels. A worked figure for a single sovereign is on our quote page.
How it works
Message us on WhatsApp with what you have
Coins start with a WhatsApp message: how many, which coins, and a photo if you have one. We confirm today's figure for each and the right way to send them. Lots under 2,000 euro go in the free insured pack; larger lots are handled in person in Dublin by appointment, from 1,000 euro.
Post it from any An Post office
Seal the items in the security bag, hand the parcel in at any An Post office and keep the proof of postage. The label is prepaid, tracked and insured, and once An Post scans it the parcel travels at our risk up to 2,000 euro. It usually reaches us in Dublin the next working day.
We weigh and XRF test it on camera
Every piece is weighed on a calibrated scale and tested on an XRF analyser, which reads the metal's composition without damaging it. The opening and testing are recorded, and your itemised offer lists each piece, its weight, its grade and the published price per gram applied. The offer stays open for 48 hours.
Accept the price and get paid by bank transfer
Accept and we pay by bank transfer the same working day, less 12 euro return postage at cost, waived when the parcel's melt value is over 500 euro. Decline and everything comes back to you free by tracked post. One valid photo ID is checked before any payment.
Posting from outside Dublin? Our pages for Cork, Galway and Limerick cover the timing from each. The figure for a full sovereign, 717.58 euro today, is the same from every county.
Questions people ask
How much is a gold sovereign worth in Ireland today?
A full sovereign contains 7.32 grams of fine gold, so its metal value is 7.32 times the live price of a gram of pure gold, less the buyer's margin. Our figure for a full and a half sovereign today is in the table on this page and moves with the market through the day. The final price is confirmed after XRF testing.
Do you pay on the sovereign's weight or its gold content?
On the fine gold content, at our bullion rate, which is the same as our 24ct rate. A full sovereign weighs 7.98 grams but 7.32 grams of that is gold; the rest is copper. Multiplying the gross weight by our 22ct rate gives nearly the same figure, but fine content is the clearer way to compare buyers.
Is an old sovereign worth more than a new one?
Usually not: a worn Victorian or Edwardian sovereign of a common date is worth its gold, the same as one struck last year. Scarce dates, branch mint marks and proofs can carry a collector premium. We check the date and mint mark on every coin and tell you if it should go to a coin dealer or auction house instead.
What is a sovereign in a ring or pendant mount worth?
The coin is paid on its fine gold content and the mount on its own weight and carat, usually 9ct. If the coin has been soldered or the rim rubbed down it is still 22ct gold and is weighed and paid as such. Mounted sovereigns are nearly always common dates, so the metal value is the value.
Can I post sovereigns?
Yes, once we have agreed the lot on WhatsApp. One or two sovereigns sit well inside the 2,000 euro insured limit of the free pack. Larger holdings are handled in person in Dublin by appointment, from 1,000 euro, and tested while you watch.
Is there tax when I sell sovereigns?
There is no VAT on selling. Capital Gains Tax can apply to a gain over the annual exemption, and sovereigns are not exempt from CGT in Ireland in the way they are in the UK. Our tax page explains the rules in general terms; it is not tax advice.
