How much is 22ct gold worth per gram?

22ct gold is worth 89.89 euro per gram in Ireland today: that is the net price Liffey Metals pays for it, live as of 26 Oct, 12:03 Dublin time, with no testing or handling fees. The figure follows the live gold price: 22ct is 91.6 percent pure gold (hallmarked 916), so a gram of it is worth that share of a gram of pure gold, less the buyer's margin.

What 22ct gold is

22ct gold is 22 parts gold to 2 parts other metal: 91.6 percent pure, hallmarked 916. It is the highest carat normally made into jewellery, because pure 24ct is too soft to hold a shape in daily wear; the small addition of copper and silver gives 22ct enough hardness while keeping the rich, saturated yellow that 22ct is bought for. It marks easily and bends more readily than 18ct, so 22ct pieces tend to be bangles, chains and heavier set work rather than fine claw settings.

Where 22ct turns up

Most Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Middle Eastern gold jewellery is 22ct, often stamped 916 or 22K, so wedding sets, bangles and heavy chains from those traditions are usually this grade. The bullion coins people inherit are 22ct too: sovereigns, half sovereigns, Krugerrands and older Britannias. Coins are a separate case because they are priced on fine gold content rather than by the gram of alloy; our coins page has today's figure for each and explains when a coin is worth more to a collector than as metal. Jewellery marked 22K sometimes tests a little lower than 916, and some is a 22ct skin over a lower core, which is why every piece is XRF tested and priced on what it actually is.

How the price per gram is worked out

Three numbers, the same for every honest buyer. The spot price: the live international price of pure gold, quoted per troy ounce and converted to euro per gram (a troy ounce is 31.1035 grams). The fineness: for 22ct, 91.6 percent, so multiply by 0.916. The payout rate: the share of that contained gold value the buyer pays, which covers refining and margin. Our rate is published on the prices page and refreshed through the day; the price shown there is the price paid, with nothing deducted for testing or handling.

Quick answers

Is 22ct gold the same as pure gold?

No. 22ct is 91.6 percent gold (hallmarked 916); pure gold is 24ct, 99.9 percent (999). The small copper or silver addition makes 22ct hard enough to wear and to strike as coin. Per gram, 22ct is worth about 92 percent of the pure gold price before the buyer's margin.

Are gold sovereigns 22ct?

Yes. British sovereigns, Krugerrands and pre-2013 Britannias are 22ct (916.7 fine). Coins are priced on their fine gold content rather than per gram of alloy: a full sovereign holds 7.32 grams of pure gold. Our coins page gives today's figure for each common coin.

What does the 916 hallmark mean?

916 parts per thousand gold, which is 22ct. Indian and Middle Eastern jewellery is often marked 916 or 22K, sometimes with a BIS hallmark in the Indian case. Some pieces are stamped 22K but test lower, so we price on the XRF reading rather than the stamp.

Can I post 22ct jewellery?

Yes, at the same postal limits as any gold: lots worth about 300 to 2,000 euro go in the free insured pack. Because 22ct is worth so much per gram, a modest weight reaches the top of that window quickly; larger lots are arranged on WhatsApp or brought to Dublin by appointment.
