How much is 18ct gold worth per gram?

18ct gold is worth 73.60 euro per gram in Ireland today: that is the net price Liffey Metals pays for it, live as of 26 Oct, 12:03 Dublin time, with no testing or handling fees. The figure follows the live gold price: 18ct is 75 percent pure gold (hallmarked 750), so a gram of it is worth that share of a gram of pure gold, less the buyer's margin.

What 18ct gold is

Carat is purity out of 24 parts. 18ct gold is 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals, which works out at 75 percent pure gold, so 18ct pieces are hallmarked 750. The other quarter is copper and silver in yellow gold, copper-heavy in rose gold, and palladium or nickel in white gold. Those metals set the colour and the hardness, but a buyer pays for the 75 percent that is gold. 18ct is softer and a deeper yellow than 9ct, which is why it is the standard for fine jewellery and for most wedding and engagement rings made outside Britain and Ireland.

Where 18ct turns up

Continental European jewellery is mostly 18ct, so Italian chains, French and Swiss pieces and anything bought on holiday in southern Europe is likely 750. Higher-end Irish and British jewellers use 18ct for rings and set pieces. Watch cases from the better Swiss houses are often 18ct too, and a solid 18ct case can weigh more than a bracelet. Dental gold is usually in the 16 to 20ct range and is tested rather than assumed. If the mark is worn off or there never was one, XRF testing reads the actual fineness in seconds without damaging the piece, so unmarked 18ct is paid as 18ct, not as a cautious lower guess. Our hallmarks guide shows the marks to look for.

How the price per gram is worked out

Three numbers, the same for every honest buyer. The spot price: the live international price of pure gold, quoted per troy ounce and converted to euro per gram (a troy ounce is 31.1035 grams). The fineness: for 18ct, 75 percent, so multiply by 0.75. The payout rate: the share of that contained gold value the buyer pays, which covers refining and margin. Our rate is published on the prices page and refreshed through the day; the price shown there is the price paid, with nothing deducted for testing or handling.

Quick answers

Is 18ct gold worth more than 9ct?

Yes, about twice as much per gram. 18ct is 75 percent pure gold and 9ct is 37.5 percent, so the same weight of 18ct contains twice the gold. Both are priced off the same live spot price; only the fineness differs.

What hallmark does 18ct gold carry?

750, the fineness in parts per thousand. Older British and Irish pieces may read 18ct or 18K, and continental pieces usually carry 750 alone, sometimes with a small national mark beside it.

Is 18ct white gold worth the same as 18ct yellow gold?

Yes. White, yellow and rose 18ct all contain 75 percent gold; the colour comes from the other 25 percent (palladium or nickel for white, copper for rose). Rhodium plating on white gold adds nothing to the scrap value. Priced on gold content, they are the same per gram.

Do stones count in the weight?

No. Diamonds and gemstones are weighed around or deducted, and a fair buyer tells you which. If a piece has significant stones, say so when you send it: they are returned to you or valued separately rather than priced as gold.
