How the price per gram is calculated

Every honest gold price per gram comes from the same three steps.

  1. Start with spot. Gold is traded internationally in US dollars per troy ounce. Convert to euro at the live exchange rate and divide by 31.1035, the grams in a troy ounce. That is the price of one gram of pure gold. It is public: any finance site shows it.
  2. Multiply by fineness. Jewellery is an alloy. 9ct is 375 parts gold per thousand, 14ct is 585, 18ct is 750, 22ct is 916 and 24ct is 999. One gram of 9ct contains 0.375 grams of gold, so its melt value is 37.5 percent of the pure figure.
  3. Subtract the buyer's margin. The buyer pays for refining, testing, insurance and handling out of the difference between melt value and what they pay you. That margin is where buyers differ, and it is invisible unless the buyer publishes a per-gram rate. Ours is already built into the table above, and every figure is rounded down to the cent so rounding never goes in our favour.

So when gold moves one percent, every price above moves one percent with it. When it does not move, neither do we. There is no separate “Irish gold price”: the metal is priced the same in Dublin, London and Zurich, and only the buyer's share changes.

Reading the carat off your item

The number in the hallmark tells you which row applies: 375 for 9ct, 585 for 14ct, 750 for 18ct, 916 for 22ct, 999 for 24ct. Older Irish and British pieces may say 9ct, 18ct or 18K instead. If there is no mark, or it is worn away, the XRF test tells us the fineness and the item is paid at the matching rate. Our hallmarks guide shows the marks with pictures.

Why the number you receive is lower than the number in the news

The news quotes pure gold, per troy ounce, at the wholesale price banks pay each other. Nobody receives that for a broken chain. A gram of 9ct contains 0.375 grams of gold, so its melt value is already 37.5 percent of the headline figure before any buyer's margin. The useful comparison is never against spot; it is against what another buyer would pay you, per gram, for the same carat, on the same day.

Questions people ask

What is the gold price per gram in Ireland today?

Pure (24ct) gold trades at the international spot price, quoted in US dollars per troy ounce and converted to euro; divide by 31.1035 for a gram. What you receive for jewellery is that figure times the fineness of the carat, less the buyer's margin. Our net figures for each carat are on this page and refreshed through the day.

Why is the price for 9ct so much lower than for 18ct?

Because 9ct is 37.5 percent gold and 18ct is 75 percent. The same gram of 18ct contains twice the gold, so it is worth about twice as much. Both are priced off the same spot price.

Is the price per gram the same as the price of gold?

No. The price of gold you see in the news is for pure gold, per troy ounce, before anyone has to refine it. A price per gram for 9ct or 18ct jewellery is for an alloy, and is what a buyer will pay after their costs. Compare buyers on that second number, not the first.

How often do your prices change?

Our published prices track the live market and are refreshed through the day. The figure is fixed at the moment you accept an offer, so the price you agree is the price you are paid.

Do you charge for testing or handling?

No. The published price per gram is net: no testing fees, no handling charges. On postal sales, 12 euro return postage is deducted at cost only if you sell, and waived when the melt value of the parcel is over 500 euro.
