Calculator questions

Is the calculator free to use?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no email address and nothing to download. The rates it uses are the same published buy prices we pay, updated from the live London market every few minutes while the market is open.
How do I find the carat of my gold?
Look for the hallmark: 375 is 9ct, 585 is 14ct, 750 is 18ct, 916 is 22ct and 999 is 24ct. On Irish and British pieces it is usually inside a ring band or on the clasp of a chain. If there is no mark, choose the carat you think it is; we test every item by XRF anyway and pay on what the test shows.
How do I weigh my gold at home?
Kitchen scales that read to one gram are fine for a rough figure. For a chain or a few rings the difference between a kitchen scale and our calibrated scale is normally under a gram. Take stones out of the weight if they are large; small stones make little difference.
Is the figure the calculator shows what I will actually be paid?
It is the net amount at today's rate for the carat and weight you entered, with no fees deducted afterwards. The final offer follows weighing and XRF testing of the actual items on camera, and the market moves during the day, so the figure you accept is the one on your itemised offer.
Does the calculator work for silver and platinum?
Yes. Choose a silver or platinum product in the menu and enter the weight. The silver rates are for sterling (925) and fine (999); platinum is priced on 950.
What do I do with the figure once I have it?
Request a free insured postal pack from this page, or arrange to meet us in Dublin. Either way the offer is itemised piece by piece against the published rate, and you can decline it and have everything returned free.
