Where does 18ct gold turn up?

Engagement and eternity rings, wedding bands bought to match them, Italian chains and bracelets, French and Swiss watch cases, and most jewellery made on the continent, where 18ct is the usual standard rather than 9ct. Indian and Middle Eastern pieces are more often 22ct, and American pieces 14ct, so check the number rather than assuming: 750 is 18ct, 585 is 14ct, 916 is 22ct.

18ct comes in yellow, white and rose. The colour is set by what the other 25 percent is made of, not by how much gold is present, so every colour of 18ct is paid at the same rate per gram. White gold is usually rhodium plated to brighten it; the plating is far too thin to register on the scale.

How are stones handled on an 18ct piece?

Most 18ct pieces that reach us carry stones. The metal is weighed and priced with the stones excluded, and the stones are assessed separately: we quote for them or return them to you. Diamonds with a certificate are quoted as the certificate describes them; uncertified diamonds are quoted at lab-grown rates, because a certificate is what tells the two apart, so send any paperwork in with the piece. Nothing is paid for a stone without your say-so, and you can take every stone back.

Is an 18ct piece ever worth more than its gold?

Sometimes. A signed piece from a known house, a period piece with its original stones, or a watch from a maker with a secondary market can sell for more than the metal through the right channel. We price gold, so when a piece looks like one of those we say so and suggest an auction house or a specialist, rather than melting something that should not be melted. For everything else, which is most of what arrives, the metal value is the value, and it is paid at the published rate.

Can I mix 18ct with other gold in one parcel?

Yes. Each piece is tested and listed separately on the offer, so 18ct is paid at the 18ct rate beside 9ct paid at the 9ct rate. If a piece marked 750 tests lower, for example a repaired ring with a 9ct shank, the offer shows both parts and the rate applied to each, and you can see the test on the recording. Our XRF page explains what the analyser reads.

How it works

  1. Request a free postal pack

Fill in the short form at liffeymetals.com/sell/post and verify your email. The free Bosca Óir pack arrives by An Post with a security bag, a prepaid insured return label and a one-page guide. Gold worth roughly 300 to 2,000 euro goes straight through; larger lots are handled in person in Dublin by appointment.

  2. Post it from any An Post office

Seal the items in the security bag, hand the parcel in at any An Post office and keep the proof of postage. The label is prepaid, tracked and insured, and once An Post scans it the parcel travels at our risk up to 2,000 euro. It usually reaches us in Dublin the next working day.

  3. We weigh and XRF test it on camera

Every piece is weighed on a calibrated scale and tested on an XRF analyser, which reads the metal's composition without damaging it. The opening and testing are recorded, and your itemised offer lists each piece, its weight, its grade and the published price per gram applied. The offer stays open for 48 hours.

  4. Accept the price and get paid by bank transfer

Accept and we pay by bank transfer the same working day, less 12 euro return postage at cost, waived when the parcel's melt value is over 500 euro. Decline and everything comes back to you free by tracked post. One valid photo ID is checked before any payment.

Questions people ask

What is 18ct gold worth per gram today?

Our net price per gram for 18ct is in the first table on this page and follows the live London price. It is paid per gram of the item as weighed, with nothing deducted for testing or handling. The final price is confirmed after XRF testing.

Is white gold worth the same as yellow gold?

At the same carat, yes. 18ct white gold is 75 percent gold alloyed with palladium or nickel instead of copper, and it is paid at the 18ct rate by weight. Rhodium plating on the surface is too thin to weigh and makes no difference either way.

My ring says 750 with no carat. Is it 18ct?

Yes. 750 means 750 parts gold per thousand, which is 18ct. Continental European pieces, Italian chains and most modern Irish and British pieces use the number rather than the carat. 18K means the same thing.

Do you pay extra for a designer or branded piece?

We pay for the metal by weight and carat. A branded piece in good condition may sell for more than its gold through a jeweller or auction house, and we say so when we see one rather than melting it. Branded watches are quoted separately.

How do you handle diamonds in an 18ct ring?

Stones are weighed out where practical so you are paid on the gold alone, and the diamonds are assessed separately. They go in the offer as their own line or come back to you with the setting removed, whichever you prefer. Send any certificate with the ring.

Can I post a valuable 18ct piece?

The free pack is insured to 2,000 euro per parcel from the moment An Post scans it. Lots above that are tested in front of you in Dublin by appointment; message us on WhatsApp to arrange it.
