What we do
Platinum is almost always 950 fine (95 percent platinum, 5 percent ruthenium, cobalt or iridium), so there is less sorting than with gold, where five carats are common. The XRF analyser confirms the fineness and shows up the pieces that are white gold with a rhodium finish, which people often take for platinum.
The price per gram tracks the live London platinum price. It has sat below gold's for some years, so a platinum ring is worth less than the same ring in 18ct gold would be; it is still worth far more than its weight in 9ct, because 95 percent of it is the precious metal.

How the price is worked out
Weight in grams, times the fineness (0.95 for 950 platinum), times the live London platinum price per gram, less our published margin. The figure on the board below is the net result of that sum: the price per gram of the item, as it is paid, with nothing deducted afterwards. Stones, steel springs and anything that is not platinum are weighed out first.
The same price list applies in every county and at our Dublin appointments: there is one published figure, not a counter price and a postal price.

Questions people ask
- How much is platinum worth per gram in Ireland today?
- The net figure per gram for 950 platinum is on the board on this page and on liffeymetals.com/prices, refreshed through the day off the live London price. There is no testing fee and no handling deduction: the figure shown is the figure paid.
- Is platinum worth more than gold?
- Not at the moment. Platinum traded above gold for most of the 2000s, but since 2015 gold has been the dearer metal per gram, usually by a wide margin. A platinum ring is still worth selling: it is 95 percent pure, where a 9ct gold ring is 37.5 percent, so the weight does more work.
- How do I know my ring is platinum and not white gold?
- Look for the hallmark: 950 (or Pt950, PLAT, PLATINUM) is platinum; 375, 585 or 750 with a rhodium finish is white gold. Platinum is also noticeably heavier than white gold for the same size, and it does not yellow where the rhodium has worn. We test every piece by XRF regardless, so an unmarked ring is priced on what it actually is.
- Do you buy platinum with the diamond still in?
- Yes. Send the ring as it is. We weigh and test the platinum with the stone excluded and pay the published per-gram rate for the metal. The diamond is assessed separately: we quote for it or return it to you.
- Do you buy palladium or other platinum-group metals?
- Palladium (500 or 950) and rhodium plating are read by the XRF analyser and we can quote for palladium jewellery and scrap on request; message us a photo first. Platinum is the metal we price on the board.
- Can I sell platinum in person in Dublin?
- Yes, by appointment, for lots worth more than the in-person threshold shown on the sell page. You watch the weighing and the XRF test and are paid by bank transfer the same day. Smaller lots go in the free insured postal pack at the same price per gram.
