Snapped, bent, odd earrings: paid on the metal
Sell broken gold jewellery
Broken gold is paid exactly like intact gold: weight times the published rate for its carat. Today we pay 34.06 euro per gram for 9ct, 73.30 euro for 18ct and 89.52 euro for 22ct, live as of 26 Oct, 14:06 Dublin time. A snapped chain, a single earring and a bent clasp all go in the same insured pack.

What counts as broken gold?
Anything you would not wear but still carries gold: chains snapped at the clasp, knots you cannot undo, earrings without their pair, rings bent out of shape, bracelets with broken links, clasps that no longer close, charms pulled off a bracelet, dental gold if the dentist removed it (see our dental gold page). Gold watches with dead movements are paid on the case and bracelet with the movement out.
What should I leave on, and what should I take off?
Leave gold parts on. Take off anything clearly not gold if you can: steel watch movements, steel springs in clasps, leather straps, fabric. Stones you want back should be noted on the request form; we weigh them out where practical. Pearls and glass are returned.
Is it still worth posting if it is only a few grams?
Weigh it first. A heavy 9ct chain that snapped can be 10 grams or more; a single small earring might be under a gram. If the total is below our postal minimum, add the other pieces you meant to clear out, or message us on WhatsApp for the best route for a small lot.
How it works
Request a free postal pack
Fill in the short form at liffeymetals.com/sell/post and verify your email. The free Bosca Óir pack arrives by An Post with a security bag, a prepaid insured return label and a one-page guide. Gold worth roughly 300 to 2,000 euro goes straight through; larger lots are handled in person in Dublin by appointment.
Post it from any An Post office
Seal the items in the security bag, hand the parcel in at any An Post office and keep the proof of postage. The label is prepaid, tracked and insured, and once An Post scans it the parcel travels at our risk up to 2,000 euro. It usually reaches us in Dublin the next working day.
We weigh and XRF test it on camera
Every piece is weighed on a calibrated scale and tested on an XRF analyser, which reads the metal's composition without damaging it. The opening and testing are recorded, and your itemised offer lists each piece, its weight, its grade and the published price per gram applied. The offer stays open for 48 hours.
Accept the price and get paid by bank transfer
Accept and we pay by bank transfer the same working day, less 12 euro return postage at cost, waived when the parcel's melt value is over 500 euro. Decline and everything comes back to you free by tracked post. One valid photo ID is checked before any payment.
Questions people ask
Is broken gold worth the same as intact gold?
Yes, per gram at the same carat. We buy the metal, not the design, so a snapped chain pays the same rate as an intact one of the same weight and fineness. The final price is confirmed after XRF testing.
Should I take clasps and springs off before posting?
Remove steel springs from clasps if you can; they are not gold and add weight that would be paid at the gold rate until we weigh them out. Leave gold clasps on. If a piece is too fiddly, send it as it is and we weigh out non-gold parts on camera.
Can I sell a single earring?
Yes. One earring from a lost pair is one of the commonest items we see. Weigh it, check the mark, multiply by today's rate. Add other pieces if you are under the postal minimum.
What about gold plated or filled broken jewellery?
Plated and filled pieces have a thin skin of gold over base metal and carry little value. The XRF test identifies them; we tell you and return them free.
Do bent or squashed rings pay less?
No. A bent wedding band weighs what it weighs. We can straighten it enough to weigh accurately; the rate per gram does not change with condition.
Can I mix broken and good pieces in one parcel?
Yes. Each item is listed separately on the offer at the rate for its carat, broken or not.
